Some subjects shouldn't be learned in a classroom. Semester-long watersports classes are offered at MBAC through the San Diego State University School of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences. SDSU and USD students can take these classes for college credit, however, they are open to EVERYONE and are a great value for someone who would like to take a longer term course.

ENS BEGINNING SAILING

Learn how to sail in our Beginning Sailing Course. This course is for all levels of sailors. The first half of this class you will learn to sail in a single-handed boat, the Sabot. Knowledge and confidence are built through lectures and sailing on the protected waters of Mission Bay. Topics include sailing theory, boat handling, safety, right of way, knots and docking. The second half of this class you will learn to sail a multi-person boat, the Holder 14. New topics will include launching and rigging a trailerable boat, sail trim, the tiller extension, hiking straps, centerboard control, balance and teamwork.

Learn how to sail in our Hobie Cat Sailing Course. This course is for all levels of sailors. The first half of this class you will learn to sail the Hobie Catamaran with your fellow classmates. The Hobie 16 has been the most popular catamaran in America for the past 15 years. Instruction includes rigging, sail trim, boat handling, and righting. The second half of this class you will learn to sail the Laser. The Laser is fast and responsive, giving you a chance to build on your basic sailing skills in a single-handed boat. The Laser has been chosen for Olympic sailing due to its simplicity and popularity worldwide.

Learn how to sail in our Keelboat Sailing Course. This course is for all levels of sailors. This course will allow students to learn the basics of sailing while enjoying the comfort of a keelboat. The class will be taught on an international one-design class boat, the J/24. On-the-water topics will include tacking, jibing, safety, boat handling, sail trim, right of way, basic chart reading, and more. Students will also learn man techniques including crew overboard drills, docking, and picking up a mooring ball.

Learn to windsurf on the protected waters of Mission Bay. Skills that will be taught include rigging, steps to sailing, terminology, sailing theory and water safety. Two sizes of boards, five sail sizes and a dry land simulator are available to give everyone a successful experience. This 15-week course will ensure that you get a lot of on-the-water coaching and will be confident enough to rent our equipment on your own.

This course is designed for surfers with experience surfing at least head-high waves. It gives you the opportunity to have a group of fellow surfers to surf with. This class finds the best surf conditions and meets at a different San Diego area surf spot each week.

Sea kayaks are sleek, fast and very seaworthy. With their sit-inside design and the skills you learn in this class, sea kayaks can become an extension of your body and allow you to glide effortlessly over the water. In this class you will learn the basic paddle strokes, assisted and solo re-entry methods, and touring techniques necessary for low risk and fun sea kayaking adventures. This class will explore Mission Bay and, if conditions permit, paddle into the ocean!

Stand up paddling has emerged as an easy and exciting way to combine a strong core workout with the enjoyment of being out on the water. In this fun and active experience, you will learn the fundamentals of stand up paddling including etiquette, safety, equipment, and paddling technique. Every week you will alternate your Stand Up Paddle activity with a bay paddle, SUPYoga, and SUPFit giving you a variety of fitness in this class.

ENS BEGINNING OLYMPIC ROWING

Learn the fundamentals of one of the most beautiful and classic water sports in the world! You will learn proper rowing technique, oar control, terminology, and water safety in a variety of boats. You will be introduced to the rowing basics in the 16-person training barge and rapidly progress to the traditional eight-oar shells seen in Olympic and collegiate competition. While the first half of the class you will be learning sweep rowing, the second half will give you the opportunity to learn sculling. You will be introduced to sculling technique, terminology, and water safety using the very stable wherry. You will then move into the faster and more responsive training single.
