Have you ever thought about why you suddenly become more relaxed or happy when you’re at the beach? Or why all the stresses of the world seem to disappear when you surf or SUP? Well there may now be a scientific argument as to why that is.

In a book released last summer, Blue Mind: The Surprising Science That Shows How Being Near, In, On, or Under Water Can Make You Happier, Healthier, More Connected, and Better at What You Do, author and marine biologist Wallace Nichols makes many arguments about the neuroscience supporting the idea that our brains are wired to react positively to water, and suggests that being close to water can make us not only happier, calmer and more emotionally healthy, but also more successful in life, relationships and even business. Whether it is the color, sound, or appearance of water our brains are pleasantly calmed and soothed in or around water. Water can even evoke creativity and thoughtfulness while inspiring people to be their best. Nichols states that “…[W]ater provides the most profound shortcut to happiness out there.”

Lucky for us San Diegans, we have such great access to water sources to surround ourselves with this “blue mind” state to bring out this happiness. If your resolution is to be happier, healthier, or more productive, then try spending some more time in, or around water and see if it works for you. We have many opportunities for you to immerse yourself in a relaxing and fun culture centered around the water.
