Summer is here and what that means for many San Diego youth is summer camp. It’s finally a break from school for the kids and their chance meet new friends, learn new skills, and have fun in the sun. For those of you who went to summer camp as a kid, those great memories made a tremendous impact on you. For those of you who did not go to summer camp as a kid, but have children that do, you understand what it means to them when they come home and tell you about their adventures from the day. Either way, we are sure you understand the importance of summer camp for today’s youth.
In the current economic climate, many local families cannot afford to send their children to summer camp. Many households are getting by on single incomes due to lay-offs, or reduced wages due to fiscal cutbacks or furloughs. The unemployment rate in San Diego County is a stifling 10%. The need for financial assistance has never been greater.
With your support and contribution, you can help those families in need by donating to the Watersports Camp Campership grant. Our Camperships offer local at-risk and under-represented youth and families the financial support necessary to attend the Watersports Camp. This year alone we will serve over 100 kids through our Campership program who otherwise would not have been able to experience summer camp. Our Campership kids come from all over San Diego County, including collaborations with the Copley Family YMCA in City Heights, the Armed Services YMCA of San Diego County, and St Vincent De Paul Village’s Children Services.
Our limited funds for Camperships have been exhausted for the year, and we continue to have many families come in need of financial assistance. Your tax-deductable donation can help reduce the costs of camp for a child in your community. You can make a donation online or can send a check payable to "Peninsula Family YMCA" mailed to P.O. Box 6678, San Diego, CA 92166-0678. Please write “Camperships” in the memo line of the check so we know to send you a receipt of your donation. No donation is too big or too small. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
Thank you for all of your support!
