MBAC- Where blue meets green

You probably haven’t even noticed the difference, in fact that’s the point, but the MBAC has become a model for sustainable business practices right under your nose.  It just goes to show that there are changes a company can make to be more eco-friendly that can be easier than you think and sometimes just require a change in how you think.  The MBAC taken an approach to being good stewards of our environment that focuses on four major goals: Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency, Waste Reduction, and Pollution Prevention.

Here are some highlights:  

Renewable Energy

  • Solar Photovoltaic system produces 100% of our electricity needs

Energy Efficiency

  • ultra-high efficiency water heat and solar-thermal water heating system extensive day-lighting (skylights) in place so that indoor lighting is not necessary on most days
  • occupancy sensors and timers for lighting
  • high-efficiency washer and dryer which uses 65% less water and 55% less energy

Waste Reduction

  • We recycle1 to 1 recycle to trash can ratio throughout MBAC
  • recycle over 60% of our waste stream
  • 100% post-consumer recycled copy paper, toilet paper and paper towels
  • high-pressure boat washer reducing consumption by over 50%
  • waterless urinals saving over 80,000 gallons/year
  • installed high efficiency toilets that use 75% less water
  • Use only recyclable plates, cups, napkins and flatware

Pollution prevention

  • send marine science instructors to local schools to conduct San Diego Watershed demonstrations
  • Thin Blue Logoinstalled a dry weather wash water runoff capture system
  • trained our employees about runoff best management practices
  • use only environmentally friendly Green Seal cleaners
  • regularly sweep our parking lot and pick up any trash
  • Educate our participants on the Think Blue philosophy
