Last month the Counselor-In-Training program took on a project to help keep Mission Bay beaches clean and free from debris. So far to date, the CITs have collected 114.2 pounds of trash, and the poundage keeps growing with each passing day. The program was recently highlighted on the Channel 6 morning news.
Each day the CITs weigh their collected trash, trying to beat the previous day’s clean up. CIT Erin Cotter says “We are cleaning up trash so it doesn’t end up as pollution in the bay and the ocean. We also have a collection of ‘found items’ that we display on a board, which is filled with random items like a Bambi doll and a birthday invitation. ”
Every Friday at the Parents Day Lunch four CITs put on their home-made Recycle Ranger t-shirts and inform campers and their families about what is and isn’t recyclable. The CITs are earning community service hours while being educated and educating others about sustainability. It’s a win-win situation for our community.
