A few thoughts from Chris Clasby: Rookie Counselor

Chris Clasby thinkin...

Finding the perfect summer job wasn't exactly my goal. As a Senior at UCSD, I have come to realize that a summer job usually means low pay as a gofer, or being content with the life experience of an unpaid internship. But after working in an office the last two summers, I knew that I wanted to get back outside, teach something I love, and help others learn to love being on the water. When I found Mission Bay Aquatic Center, I knew it would be the perfect fit. What impressed me most is the freedom that the campers have to explore the variety of activities here at MBAC. I have worked at summer camps before, but while other campers would get maybe an hour in the pool, or on a slip n' slide, the campers at the Mission Bay Aquatic Center have their choice of sailing, wakeboarding, kayaking, snorkeling, or just hanging out with people who love to make the great outdoors their life.

Of course, the training was intense. From CPR and First Aid, to Lifeguarding and my California Boating Certification, it soon became clear that safety and fun are synonymous at MBAC. From the top down, the staff works tirelessly to make it look easy and soon enough, ensuring a safe environment becomes second nature. After all, fun begins with safety at the MBAC.

As a counselor, I get to do what I love while working in an environment where professionalism is a matter of necessity, and safety is the driving force of fun. I have worked at summer camps and I have worked on the water, but at MBAC, there is the unique sense that the best of both worlds can be had, one week at a time. All it takes is a dedicated staff with the best jobs in the world, and campers who are motivated to try a different sort of summer experience, and the MBAC can make their time on the water an experience they will have for life. I guess that sometimes you find the best opportunities when you least expect them, and I know that this summer will continue to bring smiles from where I would have never thought to look.
