MBAC event for injured soldiers

MBAC event benefits injured service members

On December 1st, the Mission Bay Aquatic Center took advantage of a beautiful, sunny day and hosted a day of sailing for injured service members and veterans. Participants had the choice to learn the basics of sailing or to kick back and relax as MBAC staff cruised them around in the cool breeze. As the wind picked up, everyone enjoyed sail rides in Holder 14's, Hobie Cats, or Freedom 22 sailboats.

To run the event, MBAC partnered with the San Diego's Adaptive Sports Foundation, which encourages children and adults with physical disabilities to participate in recreational and sporting events. Jazmin Garcia, Program and Administrative Assistant for Adaptive Sports, acknowledged that sunshine and fresh sea air helps to improve the quality of life for those she works with.

Participants at the event included soldiers recently injured in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as disabled veterans who are receiving care at the San Diego VA Hospital. Taylor Pass, an employee of the Aquatic Center, expressed how she enjoyed putting a smile on the face of those people who bravely defend America in foreign wars. She said, "There's nothing better than starting off the holiday season by giving back to those who fight heroically for my freedom!"

The Aquatic Center is experienced in hosting special events for the community and for persons with disabilities.
