PROJECT CIT successful at teaching sustainablity

Found it board

For most of this summer at the Watersports Camp, Counselors-in-Training (CITs) dedicated their to time bettering the beaches around Mission Bay with Project CIT.   The CITs have not only cleaned up 200 lbs of trash along the bay during daily beach clean ups, but they focused on educating campers at The Watersports Camp about living a sustainable lifestyle.

The CITs hand made “recycling ranger shirts,” recorded an educational “recycle ranger” skit, and made a remix to Lady Gaga’s Alejandro song, but with their own lyrics about sustainability.  One line in the song reads, “Reduce your waste, reuse more things, be conscious.  Please don’t pollute, let’s change our ways, pick up your cigarette butts.”

Project CIT Coordinator Tara Kelly said, “Seeing how quickly the CITs became passionate about sustainability was inspiring.  Not only did they absorb the information, they were able to successfully educate the campers about sustainability, which was impressive.”

This was the first summer CITs participated in Project CIT.  Although the program is coming to an end this week, the “Found Items” board of the mysterious and funny items the CITs found during their beach clean ups will remain posted at the Mission Bay Aquatic Center.

The Mission Bay Aquatic Center is owned and operated by Associated Students of San Diego State University and Campus Recreation of the University of California San Diego.
